Earl Scruggs Center

NC Piedmont, Arts and Culture

Shelby has paid homage to its most famous native son by converting the old County Courthouse into the Earl Scruggs Center: Music and Stories from the American South.

The Center is a tribute to the legendary bluegrass musician who invented a new style of banjo playing as well as the other storytellers and musicians who preserved the bluegrass traditions handed down through generations.

It was in the nearby Flint Hill community where Scruggs grew up that
he developed the distinctive three-finger method of playing that now bears
his name, the Scruggs Style.

The exhibits at the Center will be a great lesson for both history and
music students alike.
