Tryon Palace has begun restoration and preservation projects at the New Bern Academy, one of the State’s oldest incorporated schools.
New Bern Academy was launched in 1764. The original school building was destroyed by fire and was reconstructed in 1809. During the Civil War the building functioned as a hospital and became part of the New Bern school system in 1899. The Academy building served as a school until 1971.
Today the classrooms are filled with exhibits focusing on the history of the building, New Bern architecture and four permanent Civil War exhibits.
The restoration work was necessary following damage to the exterior of the building by Hurricane Florence last fall.
