Construction Is Underway for Monroe Science Center
An abandoned building at 316 East Franklin Street that was originally built as a grocery store is being transformed into the new Monroe Science Center.
The Center is located next to the Union County Library and the First Presbyterian Church and near other downtown businesses in Monroe.
Two adjacent lots have also been acquired for the development of the Science Center.
An outdoor area will be the home of a World War II cargo plane adjacent to the building.
In addition to housing the grocery store, the 16,000 square-foot building was also home to a restaurant and a night club.
Monroe’s Tourism Development Authority found that a hands-on science and learning-themed facility would be an asset for Monroe and Union County residents as well as serve to attract visitors from surrounding counties and visitors to the area.
The Monroe Science Center is expected to open early next year. For more information visit www.monroenc.org.
