Asheville’s Biltmore Offers Students Unique Audio Tours

Asheville’s Biltmore Unique Tours

Summertime means a break from school work for most kids, but we know teachers always encourage “never stop learning.” So here is a great family fieldtrip to keep summer learning fun.

Biltmore offers two wonderful Audio Tours that can be rented to enhance your self-guided visit inside the house. The Adult Audio Tour is great for Middle School students and up, it talks you through Biltmore’s grand rooms as if you are being guided by one of our curators or hosts. You will learn about the Vanderbilts, their guests and the staff as well as the architecture, design and the artwork throughout the house. The Children’s Audio Tour is fun and entertaining. Narrated by the Vanderbilts’ favorite Saint Bernard, Cedric takes our younger learners through the amazing rooms of Biltmore and shares stories about what it was like to live in America’s largest home. Let’s not forget about the outdoor “classroom”…The nearly 40 acres of gardens designed in the 1890’s by Frederick Law Olmsted (think Central Park) was a challenging and unique project created in the midst of more than 80 thousand acres of cutover, eroded and over-farmed land that he transformed into a state-of-the-art farm and a model, scientifically managed forest, the first of its kind in America.

There are 8 garden and woodland paths you can stroll just from Biltmore House to the Bass Pond with the most popular being the Walled Garden. The tropical plantings mixed with manicured patterns create what we think is a Monet landscape come to life. With more than 18 different types and nearly 14,000 plants blooming between June and September you are sure to find a favorite among them. Want to know more about them…ask one of our grounds keepers while you are visiting, they love to talk plants. You can also check our website for summer seminars at The Gardner’s Place. If these weren’t enough reasons for a fun, family fieldtrip (shhh…don’t say it’s educational) kids 16 and under are free with a paid adult admission between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2015.
