Agritourism Destinations Across North Carolina this Summer

Summer is the ideal time to introduce your class to the source of the food they eat everyday. At the same time, they will receive insight into North Carolina’s largest industry, agriculture. Here are a few of the many family farms in North Carolina welcoming visits from school field trips.

Perry’s Berry’s
(828) 432-7631
During a visit to Perry’s Berry’s in Morganton near Lake James your students will learn about the life cycle of berries and pumpkins. They will also see good health practices used on the farm and enjoy a tractor-pulled wagon ride through the berry fields. Picking their own berries and meeting barnyard farm animals will make for a memorable field trip for your class.

Mike’s Farm
(910) 324-3422
Mid-April through May is the height of strawberry pickin’ season in eastern North Carolina and Mike’s Farm just 20 minutes from Jacksonville is the place to go. At Mike’s your students can pick their own strawberries and take a fun hayride around the farm. There are also a variety of animals for your students to enjoy including Pedro and Penny Ann, the Mike’s Farm donkeys.

New Beginnings Historic Farm
(828) 275-1683
As students tour this farmhouse built more than a century ago they will learn the history of the farm and the families that have lived here. A tour of the gardens helps your class understand how food and flowers grow. Students can then feed the farm animals and learn about the heritage breed livestock they see. They’ll also enjoy demonstrations in weaving, quilting, butter churning, wood stove cooking and more.

Hickory Nut Gap Farm
(828) 628-1027
Hickory Nut Gap Farm offers fi eld trip tours year round of this farm owned by fourth generation farmers. You will find farm animals in their natural environment including pigs and cows grazing on grass and clover and drinking fresh spring water. All tours include age-appropriate activities and end with an apple and a postcard souvenir.
