Sylvan Heights Bird Park invites you to plan a field trip and observe the largest collection of waterfowl, including rare and endangered species, from all around the world. A field trip can be as simple as a self-guided tour of the park with your students, or, for a more in-depth experience, you may choose to add an educational program or activity. Guided educational tours are also available for grades 5 and up. Their programs provide direct interaction with animals - primarily birds, but also alligators, snakes, insects, and other creatures — customized programs and prices available on request. We offer hands-on educational programs meeting Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and NC Essential Standards (NCES) guidelines, including bird biology and wetland ecology. To learn more about on-site and outreach education programs, please view their programs by grade.

Roanoke Canal Museum While in the area book your trip to The Roanoke Canal Museum & Trail.  The museum utilizes traditional and interactive exhibits to explain how the original canal – with its locks, culverts, and massive aqueduct – was built and turned the Roanoke River into a superhighway of commerce during the early 19th century. The story continues by explaining how the canal was transformed from a trade route into a hydroelectric power resource just over a century ago before becoming the greenway and historic site of today.
